Seeds, Compost, Soil, Building Materials, and Other Supplies

Introduction

Once land for your garden or farm is secured, one of the first steps in getting your project started is acquiring supplies, such as compost, building materials, tools, and seeds. This section lists local, regional, and national sources of these supplies, with a focus on sustainability. Of course, most of these supplies cost money, which can add up quickly for a new gardener or farmer, but fortunately there are a number of resources, also listed in this section, that can provide assistance. In other cases, there are do-it-yourself approaches that can also save a lot of money, from making your own compost to building your own tools and equipment. And, like many urban gardeners and farmers, you may even want to take one extra step prior to this in order to have a better idea of what supplies will be needed: testing your soil.
